OkoboTree Project Gets Underway

June 27, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Milford)– The “OkoboTree” project is getting kicked off today (Mon.).

Gary Keenan, a professional chainsaw carver from Des Moines, is beginning work on the first of three projects scattered around the Iowa Great Lakes. The first is located just south of the intersection of 125th Street and 253rd Avenue along the recreational trail on the east side of Big Spirit Lake. The others will be a tree straight in from the stone entrance at Lakeside Lab and at the Isthmus on the north side of the city of Spirit Lake.

The carving at the first location will depict an owl nesting inside the tree.

The trees are all expired and were identified in locations in public areas.

The carvings are being made possible in part through a $5,000 grant OkoboTree was awarded through the Mountain Dew Outdoor Grants Program.

OkoboTree is a part of the Spirit of Okoboji nonprofit group.
