Milford & Spirit Lake Fire Depts. Called To Condo Fire

June 23, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Wahpeton)– No injuries were reported in a residential fire early this (Thurs.) morning on the west side of West Lake Okoboji. Milford Fire Chief Jim Carpenter tells KUOO news they were called around 4:30 am to the Lighthouse Point Condominiums. Carpenter says a resident in one of the units reported hearing snapping noises and smoke…

“When we got to the scene we drug hose for quite a ways because it’s a long haul, and then we got up into the attic and we had active fire at the time and the guys were able to get a quick hit on it. We called Spirit Lake to assist with their aerial and some crew, and we appreciate that help, and we got it under control very quickly.”

Carpenter says there are six units in the building where the fire was located. He says they were able to contain it to the one unit…

“It has a common attic between all of them. We luckily, it stayed to the one end.”

The occupant in the unit was able to get out safely and no injuries were reported.

Carpenter says a malfunctioning ventilation fan in a bathroom is the probable cause.
