(Sioux City)– A Spencer man has been sentenced on a federal weapons charge.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office says 41-year-old Demetrius Wright will spend more than 8 years behind bars. Wright was sentenced June 3rd in U.S. District Court after having pled guilty in November of last year to being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
Court documents state that Wright illegally possessed two firearms on two occasions in 2021 after he had been convicted of domestic violence in January, 2017 and while he was subject to two different protection orders issued in Iowa and Florida. The documents state that on April 23rd of last year in Spencer, Wright possessed a .22 caliber pistol that was “straw purchased” for him by another person, and that Wright used it in an attempt to threaten another person by making a threatening video with the firearm.
The documents also state that on or about August 1st, 2021, Wright possessed a semi-automatic handgun after another person used it to commit a shooting in an apparent effort to conceal it from law enforcement investigating the shooting.
