Estherville City Council Raises Garbage Bag Fees; Discusses Parking On Rights-Of-Way

June 07, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Estherville)– The Estherville City Council Monday voted to raise the prices of city-issued curbside garbage bags. Green bags will be going to $8 for a package of 10 while orange bags will rise to $10 for a package of 10. City officials say it’s due to an increase in prices from their supplier. And City Administrator Penny Clayton says it once again has the city looking into the possibility of completely revamping its refuse collection system. She says they are once again looking into the feasibility of going to a system in which containers would be distributed to residents, with the city investing in an automated truck to pick them up…

“Because we’ve reached a point now where you’re going to pay either indirect or direct costs with the bags and the collection fee, or just a single charge on your bill. And then you’re not sending all that waste to the landfill, so it has kind of a double benefit to reevaluating that system. So leave the recycling the way it is because we just re-entered a new three-year contract for that, and then look at changing the garbage collection.”

In other business, the council approved the first reading of an ordinance that would prohibit parking on rights-of-way in the city. Code Enforcement Officer Greg Vanlangen told the council it’s having an impact on the community’s aesthetics…

“Like it or not, there’s something to be said for curb appeal when you go into a town and you get your first look going down the road, like it or not, that curb appeal makes a difference. And when we’ve got cars sitting all over the place, right-of-ways, front yards, side yards, back yards, we let them park everywhere here. It’s really becoming a problem.”

Vanlangen added that in some cases, parking on the right-of-way is also causing visibility issues for motorists.
