Forecasters Warn Of Possible Severe Weather Over Upcoming Holiday Weekend

May 27, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Forecasters say we will need to be weather aware as we move through the Memorial Day holiday weekend. The National Weather Service says temperatures and humidity will ramp up considerably. In addition, forecasters say several frontal boundaries and disturbances will be pushing through. They say the combination of those things could set the stage for several rounds of severe weather.

Mike Ehret, Dickinson County Emergency Management Coordinator, says with all the people expected in the Iowa Great Lakes this weekend, it’s going to be important for everyone to be on the lookout for any rapidly changing conditions…

“You can go about your business through the weekend and all that, but, you know, keep an eye on the sky. If we start getting those dark clouds rolling in that’s your cue to get inside and get some place safe. Monitor local radio, tv stations, whatever weather app you like on your phone. Just check those a little more frequently. Because yeah, you’re right, it does sound like we’ve got multiple chances for severe weather through this holiday weekend here.”

Ehret offers this advice for those planning to some camping over the weekend…

“When you’re going through the check-in process there and getting everything set up check with the folks that are running the park or facility you’re at there and just find out where their shelters are located and what their policies or procedures, that sort of thing, are for weather and all that. Better to do that ahead of time than scrambling at the last minute to try to figure where to go.”

Ehret adds that in the event a warning should be issued, it is your responsibility to act on that and take the necessary precautions to stay safe.
