Details Released For This Year’s Memorial Day Pgm In Spirit Lake

May 26, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Plans have been finalized for this year’s Memorial Day program in Spirit Lake. Denny Perry of the Spirit Lake American Legion says the event will be held again this year on the east lawn of the Dickinson County Courthouse…

“We’ve got plenty of room up there, bring a lawn chair and join us in honoring those who gave their lives for our freedoms today. So that starts at 10:00. The band will be there. They’re going to play a couple of tunes and then we’ll have the ceremony of the hanging of the wreathe on the cross and a 21 gun salute. And there’s a parade after the program this year. Bill Baker is organizing the parade for the VFW and they’ll go down to the VFW and have hot dogs and soda after the program.”

Perry will serve as emcee and keynote speaker for this year’s program, which will be moved to the Sami Center in the event of rain. The flags will also be on display again this year on the courthouse lawn as well as the Highways 9 and 71 junction, with 14 new flags being added this year…

“As we were talking earlier we’re approaching the 500 mark for flags. We have over 325 on the courthouse lawn and a few years back the VFW put 100 out at the corner of 9 & 71 and they’ve added to that again this year, so they’ve got almost 200 out there now. We are approaching 500 flags and we’re changing the name tags this year and making them a little more durable and long lasting so we have to switch name tags while the flags are up, so we could use help with people that don’t want to carry flags to the correct hole, put them in the ground, they can help put those name tags on that would be a great help. We’re going to do that Friday afternoon at 4:00.”

Those who can help out should show up at the courthouse lawn at that time. Perry adds they’ll also be looking for help to take the flags down Monday afternoon. Anyone interested in helping with that should show up at 4:00 pm at the courthouse lawn. Perry thanks the public in advance for their help. He also expresses his gratitude to some Spirit Lake High School students who assisted in locating flag pole holes at the courthouse lawn.
