Estherville City Council Talks Housing

May 17, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Estherville)– The Estherville City Council Monday decided to proceed with an urban revitalization housing condition assessment. City Administrator Penny Clayton says it could be a first step toward the city adopting an enhanced residential tax abatement program. She says the city is severely lagging in the construction of new homes, which dropped considerably after John Morrell closed its meat processing facility in Estherville in the 1970’s…

As a result, Clayton says the majority of houses in Estherville have some considerable age on them…

Clayton went on to explain what an enhanced abatement program might look like…

The council Monday authorized moving ahead with the housing condition assessment at a cost not to exceed $6,000.
