(Milford)– This past weekend was a busy one for the Milford Fire Department.
The first call came in around 5:30 pm Saturday when firefighters were called to a shed that was on fire at 2328 150th Avenue, near a grove and two other buildings. The Lake Park Fire Department was then called out for mutual aid. The fire consumed the building and quickly spread to two others as well as some surrounding brush. Firefighters were on the scene about two and-a-half hours. No injuries were reported. The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office assisted on the scene.
The second call came in around 1:00 pm Sunday when Milford firefighters were called 2560 270th Street, or Jones Dairy, where a barn was on fire with hay and equipment inside. The Terril, Fostoria and Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire Departments were called out for mutual aid. The Terril and Arnolds Park-Okoboji departments were canceled after the property owner consulted with firefighters already on the scene and decided to let the building burn, as it was already engulfed and there was nothing salvageable in it. Milford firefighters remained on the scene to monitor the fire, and an excavator was brought in to assist in tearing apart the burning materials. Over 21,000 gallons of water was brought to the scene to keep the fire from spreading. Firefighters were on the scene about six hours.
The Milford Fire Department reminds the public that water must be hauled to the scene in order to fight fires in rural areas. They say it makes their job dangerous and more difficult when bystanders park on roads near fire scenes to see what’s going on.
