Lack Of Bids Puts Planned Improvements To Tennis Court In Spencer On Hold

(Spencer)– A project to renovate a tennis court in Spencer has been put on hold. The city council this week voted to delay the project at the Fairview Tennis Court after no bids were received. An engineer on the project told the council the lack of bids is likely due to some unique specifications…
“We specified that the contractors be certified by the American Sports Builders Association or the Post Tension Concrete Institute, and there are no certified contractors in the state of Iowa. There are in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kansas. These guys are specialty contractors and they move around.”
It was also suggested the city hold off on going back out for bids until officials know whether or not a grant for the project has been awarded…
“And I think if you get that grant, then it makes sense to re-let this project. Let’s see what we have for funding. The other thing in talking to more of these guys after the fact, this stuff is expensive. And I’m not sure that your budget carries it, and so that grant may be, you may need that grant to carry this project.”
It was also mentioned that if the grant is not received, the specifications could be revised in an effort to attract more interest in the project.
