Estherville City Council Approves Pool Fill Policy; Storm Sewer Relief Project

April 19, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Estherville)– The Estherville City Council Monday evening approved a policy that will allow the Estherville Fire Department to fill swimming pools. The owners of those pools must be a water customer of the city of Estherville. Fire Chief Travis Sheridan told the council filling the pools will give members of his department some valuable training when it comes to the operation of pumper trucks…

“This gives my guys an opportunity, especially the new guys that are training to be pump operators, to go out, pump, fill pools in a low stress environment without having the stress of if there’s an actual emergency event. So we have 12 of them currently that are scheduled for training this month that are going to become certified for pump operating training and if they pass this test, if this policy is approved, they’re going to be our pool fillers for the summer.”

Those who take advantage of the policy will not be required to pay a sewer charge. Sheridan added several other fire departments in the area also fill pools.

The Estherville City Council also Monday approved plans for a storm sewer relief project. City Administrator Penny Clayton told the council it will help alleviate flooding during heavy rain events at the intersection of 9th Street and 1st Avenue South…

“As we know, the Central Avenue storm sewer is backed up. We have an issue at the railroad tracks. You know we just don’t have the capacity to get all the water discharged at all the same time. So it kind of backs up there and it just holds in that intersection until it goes down enough that it can get out. This will alleviate that because that water then will have a different way to go. But it will have to build up just a little in the manhole before it will go and start using that relief line. So for the most part it will be dry a lot, except for during major rains.”

The council also Monday authorized getting bids for that project. There was no mention as to a possible time frame for the work.
