The Okoboji Individual Speech Team recently participated in State Competition at Woodbury Central. 31 students performed in a total of 32 different events with nine students earning All-State nominations. Okoboji’s nine nominations placed them third in the state among all high schools with only 4A Dubuque Senior and Cedar Rapids Washington sending more students on to All-State. Okoboji’s All-Staters include Connor Cunningham, Lexi Duffy, Gwen Gehrke, Aubry Knudtson, Liam Knudtson, Carter Lambert, Maddison Lambert, Anna Petersen. These students will perform and participate in the All-State Festival on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa on March 28th.
On Tuesday, March 22nd, Okoboji High School sent three Mock Trial teams to District competition in Council Bluffs. Each team competed in two trials against teams from across Central and Western Iowa including Ames, Council Bluffs, and Central Lyon. At the end of the day, two of the OHS teams took the top two places, earning each an entrance to the State Championship Tournament in Des Moines. Okoboji Team One finished as the District Champions with Okoboji Team Two in second place. A team from Harlan captured the third and final state berth. Okoboji Team Three did not get through to state but competed well against Harlan and others. Okoboji Team One and Two will next compete at the State Championship Tournament in Des Moines March 31-April 2nd. The Iowa High School Mock Trial Program is sponsored by the Iowa State Bar Association and designed to introduce students to the legal system by providing a challenging, academic competition emphasizing the importance of research, presentation, and teamwork.
