(Sydney, Australia)– A member and former President of the Iowa Great Lakes Rotary Club is spreading the organization’s mission internationally. Kathy Fahy has been in Australia the past couple of weeks speaking with Rotary clubs in that part of the world. She spoke with KUOO news this (Thurs.) morning from Sydney, Australia…
“I am lucky enough to be selected this year to be a President’s representative which means every year the Rotary International President of the entire organization throughout the world, obviously isn’t able to attend every district conference in the world, so they select, he or she selects a representative. And so I was lucky enough to be selected as a representative to represent Rotary International to clubs in a portion of Australia which includes Canberra which is the national capitol of Australia. So I’m here representing the President of Rotary and sharing, you know, what’s new and what’s going on in the Rotary world.”
Fahy says she’s been moved and inspired by some of the projects she’s been seeing there…
“You know, building a school, helping with molaria and different issues in third world countries and just a variety of things, and so it’s really seeing what local Rotarians are doing and trying to, you know, make the world a better place. So that’s been a lot of fun and just getting to know people from around the world.”
Fahy says part of her mission involves dispelling a common misconception…
“The perception is that they’re older gentlemen in these clubs and I think one of the messages that I’m sharing is that Rotary is truly about servicing the community. And, you know, just because we’ve always done things in a certain way doesn’t mean that we have to do things that same way. We really need to be a reflection of our communities and it’s truly about doing projects and things that make our communities better, and if that looks a little different now than it used to look, then that’s okay. It’s okay to try some new things. And so that’s really the message we’re doing is that you know, covid changed a lot in this world and a lot of things and put a halt to a lot of things, and now is a great time to make those changes and to try some new things and just re-energize ourselves. So that’s really what a lot of my message is.”
Fahy tells us she’ll also be participating in a 37 and-a-half mile walk around Sydney Harbor to raise money and increase awareness of mental health issues.
