Okoboji City Council Holds First Reading Of Revised ATV/UTV Ordinance

March 10, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Okoboji)– It may soon be legal to operate all terrain and utility vehicles 24 hours a day on city streets in Okoboji. The city council Tuesday evening approved the first reading of an ordinance revision that would allow that. Currently they are only allowed to be operated between sunrise and sunset. City Administrator Michael Meyers says the proper provisions are already in place to ensure that can be done safely…

“So it requires headlights, tail lights, the whole nine. We do have regulations already in place that state that, so that’s great. The other thing worth noting is that this is for ATV’s. This is not for golf carts. Golf Carts are governed under an entirely different part of our municipal code, this is specific to ATV and UTV operation.”

While the first reading was approved Tuesday evening, efforts to waive the second and third readings and to adopt the measure failed when one council member voted against doing that, and another council member was absent. Under Iowa Code, waiving the second and third readings requires an affirmative vote of three fourths of the city council, meaning the proposed revision will need to come back to the council for a second and third reading before being considered for final adoption.
