Potential New Uses Being Explored For Soon To Be Vacant County-Owned Storage Buildings In Spirit Lake

March 02, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Some potential new uses are being explored for some county-owned storage facilities near the current secondary roads facility in Spirit Lake. That operation will soon be moving to a new location on the city’s east side, which will leave those buildings vacant.

Bill Leupold, Chairman of the Dickinson County Board of Supervisors, says he attended a recent meeting on the matter. He says the Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District is interested in using one of them to store generators, but Leupold says nothing has been decided yet…

“Ideas were thrown out about what might possibly be done. Basically where it rests now is how the city zoning ordinance would treat that area. You know, can we tear those buildings down and have one building for the sheriff and his confiscated items, and then the new building for generators, or is it zoned commercial and no, you can’t do that.”

Leupold says they’re holding off on any final decisions until they hear from Spirit Lake city officials.
