City Of Spencer Identifies Priorities For Long-Term Planning

February 25, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– The city of Spencer is doing some long range planning. Mayor Steve Bomgaars says they identified three top priorities in a recent planning session. He says they are not listed in any order of importance…

“First of all we’d like a developmental plan for what we plan to do with 100 acres that was acquired last year on the west end of town. That’s going to take a lot of work, it’s going to take a lot of collaboration, a lot of meetings, to find out what to do with that. Secondly was to establish and develop a plan for the North Y commercial area. That area on Highway 71 going north is prime commercial area, and obviously the citizens in Spencer know that our commercial area to the south is somewhat limited. But we’ve always had the opportunity to go north and what we would like to see is some how for the city to develop commercially on that Highway 71 North Y area.”

Bomgaars says the third pertains to some recreational amenities…

“Thirdly is to develop a plan for our aquatic center, for the campground and also for the building of a splash pad somewhere in the community. So those three things, two with regard to development projects and then one project which is, most people would look at as an amenity to the community. All three I think are very important to the city.”

Bomgaars says housing, debt capacity, communicating with other governmental entities and the future of city facilities, specifically Public Works, parks and the library were also discussed.
