Supervisors Discuss Speed Limits On West Side Of Big Spirit Lake

February 25, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Speed limits on County Road M-49 on the west side of Big Spirit Lake were a topic of discussion at this week’s Dickinson County Board of Supervisors meeting. It was brought to the table after concern was expressed by a resident of that area. County Engineer Dan Eckert told the supervisors they could request the Iowa Department of Transportation conduct a speed study in that area…

“Some of the things they’ll address is the number of driveways, number of intersections, they’ll do a complete speed study. It’s a pretty thorough study. It doesn’t cost us anything.”

Supervisor Steve Clark said in his opinion, it’s a matter of enforcement…

“We see it on all of the roads. You know, you drive N-14, you know, Superior down to the county line, and local people are just as bad as people coming up to the lakes on speed. You know, A-34, M-56.”

Eckert also told supervisors any change of a speed limit on the more southerly portion of County Road M-49 would have to be coordinated with the city of Orleans. The supervisors took no action on the matter.
