Ag Officials Say Russia-Ukraine Situation Could Further Impact Fertilizer Prices

February 23, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Lakefield, Mn.)– The issue surrounding high fertilizer prices may be about to get even more concerning for farmers. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield tells KUOO news the situation between Ukraine and Russia may be about to drive up those costs even more…

“That’s a source of a lot of our P and K in some cases and you know, nitrogen, natural gas, so it’s a concern and so I just don’t, we’ll have to see how that all plays out but it’s just one of those things I think that we’re just going to have to wait and see and plan ahead. But fertilizer costs, you know, that’s a big question mark with what’s happening in the world and the Russia/Ukraine situation is a little bit, you know, unnerving and a concern. It’s going to affect commodity prices on corn and soybeans and wheat and fertilizer availability and exports there, so. It’s a worldwide economy, Steve, and we’re just going to have to deal with that.”

Nesseth says producers thinking about using recently developed biological alternatives to fertilizer should do so very carefully. He says they should use some test strips or plots first before using it on an entire field.
