County Treasurers In Iowa To Soon Offer Contiguous Titling Of Motor Vehicles

February 23, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– County Treasurers in Iowa will soon be able to offer a new convenience for those registering motor vehicles. Dickinson County Treasurer Kris Rowley says they’ll soon be able to title vehicles from contiguous counties…

“Basically what that means for us is anyone from Dickinson, their county of residence, everyone here can still title here, but if you’re touching Dickinson county you can also come up and title your vehicles here in my office. So that would be Emmet county, Osceola county, O’Brien county, Palo Alto county and Clay county. Those five counties that surround us will be able to title in our office also. But only title and get that first plate set, that first registration. Everything else is still back in the county of origin.”

Rowley says the County Treasurers Association is backing a bill in the Iowa Legislature that would expand that further…

“And that would be a much broader ability for citizens to title anywhere in the state of Iowa and also do junking certificates and replacement titles and salvage titles and also lein notifications across any county to make it convenient for the citizen. So that one is what we’re still hoping to pass. That also has some fee increases to help it make more equitable for the counties doing the state work.”

Rowley says they’re also hoping to get a better reimbursement from the state for offering driver’s license services.
