Funding Available To Assist Those With Failing Private Sewer Systems

(Spirit Lake)– Some financial assistance is available for those looking to replace failing private sewer systems as well as for those looking to disconnect from a private system to connect to a public one. David Kohlhaase of the Dickinson County Environmental Health Office tells KUOO news the funding is available through the Water Infrastructure Fund and the Iowa Finance Authority…
“Properties need to be located in an unsewered community; properties constructed after July 1st, 1983 are not eligible; and properties that have transferred ownerships since 2009 are not eligible. But if you meet those criterias and you’ve got a private sewer system that’s failing and want to consider replacing it with a new system there’s a process and a procedure for an application process to see if we can get money through this grant. And then also I think of areas where sewer is where folks, public sewer, where they want to hook onto the public sewer, and there could be possible money to help those people, too.”
Kohlhaase says his office has more information on the program. The Dickinson County Environmental Health Office can be reached at 336-2770.
