Federated REA Looking At Major Broadband Expansion Project In Two SW Mn. Counties

February 03, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Jackson, Mn.)A Jackson-based company is looking at a major expansion of broadband service in two counties in southwest Minnesota. Federated Rural Electric Association CEO Scott Reimer told Jackson County Commissioners this week they’re looking into grants for broadband installation across Jackson and Martin counties. Reimer says the plans are ready and that federal funding is the main focus for now…

“We do have pretty much everything ready, the miles of line have been set, the locations have been set, we performed a survey among the group that would potentially be served by a grant like this. Overwhelming response from those who did turn in their surveys that yes, if we did build it they would take it.”

He mentioned that many of these grants go off a points system, where less money and importance of the project net you points towards getting federal grant money…

“It’s all based on points. We would want to get as many points as possible, and you actually get points for asking for less money.”

Commisisoners said they support the move. Two of them expressed interest being on a board to help with broadband plans across the county.
