(Sioux City)– An Arnolds Park man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for manufacturing and possessing homemade pipe bombs. 37-year-old Darrell Sorey was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Sioux City. He pleaded guilty in September, 2021 to one count of possessing an unregistered explosive device.
Authorities executed a search warrant on Sorey’s residence following an incident in January of 2020 near Knoxville, Iowa, in which a truck he had been driving rolled and caught fire. Consumer grade fireworks and several homemade explosives were found in the wreckage. Sorey’s father, Del Sorey, was killed in the crash.
Darrell Sorey had also been charged with possession of a firearm by a drug user and manufacturing an unregistered explosive device. Those charges were dismissed as part of a plea deal.
