Dickinson County Trails Board Authorizes Narrows Bridge Feasibility Study

January 20, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Trails Board has authorized a feasibility study into the possible construction of a bridge in the area of the narrows on East Lake Okoboji. Director Erin Reed included the information in an update earlier this week to the Board of Supervisors…

“We approved last week a proposal from Snyder and Associates to start a feasibility study on the East Lake narrows bridge which would connect Elinor Bedell State Park to the Francis Sites area and give everybody on the east side access to Spirit Lake, so that’s pretty exciting. Hopefully we can continue to move forward with that. The big thing is archaeological and environmental reviews. That’s the first phase, and if we can get past those we can get clearance on that and we can be able to start looking at concepts and everything.”

Reed also presented the supervisors with trail usage numbers for the past year…

“We were a little, about 50,000 less than last year. I think we had really high numbers in March of 2020, March and April. We had nice weather and of course, the pandemic really got people out and about using them. So we were at about 335,500 for this last year. The interesting part about the numbers, though, our average daily count between Memorial Day and Labor Day was 1,972, which was up for 2021 for that time frame, so.”

Reed says numbers over theth of July were up about four percent from the prior year.
