(Spirit Lake)– Funding has been awarded for another phase of the Tatonka Ska Trace recreational trail along former railroad right-of-way between Spirit Lake and Lake Park. Erin Reed of Dickinson County Trails reported Tuesday they’ve been awarded $395,000 through the Federal Recreation Trails program…
“Because of federal funds we have to go through an additional process with all the environmental and archaelogical reviews, which most of that is already done, but they have to re-review everything. So that takes a little bit longer. And also we want to kind of give an opportunity to Lake Park to enjoy the trail as well while we wait to actually complete the entire connection. So next, this year, we’re actually going to approve a letting for that on Friday as well, this three mile piece that hits the east edge of Lake Park and goes east three miles, then they’ll have the opportunity to use the trail while we wait to get that middle section done.”
A section of the trail from Highway 86 to Montgomery was paved late this past summer.
Reed says some bridges and culverts along the route have already been rehabilitated as part of the project.
