Jackson County Attorney Submits Resignation

January 04, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Jackson, Mn.)– The Jackson County Commissioners meeting today (Tuesday) saw the County Attorney hand his four weeks’ notice of resignation to the commissioners. Tom Prochazka said in his resignation letter that the attorney’s office is “understaffed and has not been competitive in the labor market for years while struggling with a per-attorney caseload that rivals the metro counties.”

He noted that the commissioners opted to neither increase the salary for the assistant attorney nor provide an additional attorney. The caseload burden on attorneys is 33% higher than the statewide average, and 43.8% higher excluding metro counties.

Prochazka also says that the Assistant County Attorney has been “poached” for “more gainful employment elsewhere,” something he warned about previously.

The County Attorney’s resignation will be effective as of February 2nd.

A story on the meeting and dialogue between offices will be provided when more information is acquired.
