Reminder For Iowa Boat Owners: 2022 Is A Registration Year

December 28, 2021 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– A reminder if you’re an Iowa boat owner: 2022 is a registration year. Susan Stocker, Boating Law Administrator and Education Coordinator with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says you’ll have until this coming April 30th to get them renewed…

“We’ll be registering approximately 215,000 boats that are in Iowa, and so they need to go to their County Recorder in order to renew their boat registration.”

She explains how the process works for non-residents…

“If the boat is currently registered in Iowa, non-residents need to go to their County Record where they principally use the boat. So if they’re in Dickinson county and use the boat all along, even though they might live out of state, then that’s where they would go to renew their registration.”

Stocker explains what’s needed if you’ve purchased a boat from a private seller…

“They certainly need to make sure that they have the signed over registration from the previous owner. That is sort of like your golden ticket. And then make sure that the boat has a title to it, that that title is also signed over by the previous owner.”

Stocker says revenue from boat registrations is used for a number of things…

“It supports the water trails that we have. It supports navigation enforcement. It also supports our fight with aquatic invasive species, and then last but not least, boater education. So that’s all good things that the funding goes for.”

Boat registrations are valid for three years.

Boat registration renewals can not be done until after the 1st of the year.
