(Spirit Lake)– Storm damage assessments are underway throughout the area Thursday morning following the severe weather that tore through the region late Wednesday afternoon and the damaging wind that continued into the overnight hours. Non thunderstorm wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph were common during that timeframe. In Dickinson County, Emergency Management Coordinator Mike Ehret says most of the more significant damage appears to be in the eastern part of the county. There was a report of several snapped power poles west of Terril.
Damage appears to be more extensive a bit further to our southeast. Damage was reported to a number of structures in the Ruthven area.
In southwest Minnesota, Jackson-based Federated Rural Electric Association reported more than 2,000 of its members lost power overnight in Jackson and Martin counties. The cooperative says all of those were restored by 4:00 am.
11 transmission poles owned by Great River Energy were knocked down south of Fairmont.
