Clean Up Underway In Some Areas Following Unprecedented December Severe Weather Outbreak

December 16, 2021 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Residents in some areas of northwest Iowa will be braving cold, windy conditions today (Thurs.) to clean up following the rare December severe storms that ripped through late Wednesday afternoon and evening.

There were reports of roofs that were damaged in some areas. A garage was reportedly blown off its foundation in Superior. A hog building was destroyed near Ruthven and a number of power poles were reported down southeast of Milford.

The worse of the storms passed just to the south of the Iowa Great Lakes where the damage was a little more extensive.

Locally there were a few reports of tree limbs and power lines down.

Strong winds continued through the overnight hours with gusts as high as 50 mph at times. While it won’t be quite to that magnitude today (Thurs.), gusts to 35 mph will continue into the afternoon before subsiding this evening.

Today will also be a good 25 to 30 degrees colder than our 60 degree highs Wednesday. It will feel much more like mid December in coming days with highs by Saturday not getting out of the teens. Mid 30’s will return Sunday and Monday of next week.
