Hartley Man Sentenced On Federal Firearms Charge

December 10, 2021 Steve Schwaller

(Sioux City)– A Hartley man has been sentenced to a year and a day in jail on a federal firearms charge. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Iowa says 40-year-old Jeremy Walters was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty previously to a charge of being a prohibited person in possession of firearms.

Evidence presented during plea hearings show Walters possessed two assault-style rifles, one with an extra capacity magazine, on January 28th, 2021. Authorities say Walters had been previously convicted of conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine in Clay county on or about August 23rd, 2004. Federal prosecutors say Walters further admitted to being an unlawful user of meth which prohibited him from possessing guns, and to possession of five ounces of marijuana along with the guns.

Walters was released to self-report to a federal prison once one is designated.

Walters must also serve two years of supervised release following the imprisonment.
