Additional Details Released Into Officer-Involved Shooting In Algona

December 03, 2021 Steve Schwaller

(Algona)– Some additional details have been released into an officer-involved shooting that followed a pursuit Thanksgiving Day in Algona.

Officers responded to a disturbance at the Super 8 Motel that day. When they arrived, police say the suspect, 30-year-old Juan Cavazos, failed to comply with demands and drove his vehicle toward an officer. Algona Police Officer Grant Smith then fired his gun at Cavazos, who took off in the vehicle, leading police on a pursuit. It ended a short time later with Cavazos losing control of the vehicle and crashing it.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety says Cavazos has been charged with assault on a peace officer using a dangerous weapon, attempted burglary in the second degree, assault with intent to inflict serious injury, eluding, and operating while under the influence…1st offense.

The department says Cavazos wasn’t injured as a result of the shooting, but he did sustain injuries stemming from the crash.
