Chain Reaction Collision Sends One Person To The Hospital

October 22, 2021 Steve Schwaller

(Rock Rapids)– A chain reaction collision Wednesday at the intersection of Highway 75 and a county road near Rock Rapids sent one person to the hospital.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says a 17-year-old from Doon was driving a 2007 Pontiac southbound on Highway 75 and was stopped waiting for traffic to clear so he could turn onto the county road. Deputies say 22-year-old Hunter Harkness of Larchwood was driving a 1991 Buick southbound on the highway and slowed behind the Pontiac. Authorities say 57-year-old Robert Winegarden of Pocahontas was driving a 2007 Peterbilt semi pulling a tanker southbound on Highway 75. Deputies say Winegarden failed to stop in time and collided with the Buick, pushing it into the Pontiac.

Harkness had to be extricated from his vehicle by the Rock Rapids Fire Department and was taken to the Rock Rapids hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Both the Buick and Pontiac were totaled. Damage to the semi was estimated at $4,000.

Authorities say the collision took place shortly after 2:30 pm.
