NW Iowa Man Sentenced On Burglary, Firearms Charges

(Storm Lake)– A Newell man was sentenced on Monday in Buena Vista County District Court to up to ten years in prison.

29-year-old Darrel Pounds in late April pleaded guilty to 2nd Degree Burglary, a class C felony…and Possession of a Firearm or Offensive Weapon by a Domestic Violence Offender, a class D felony. In July of last year, Pounds and an accomplice were accused of committing burglary at a residence in Alta, and Pounds was also in possession of a gun.

During a search of Pounds’ apartment in Marathon in April of last year, authorities located various types of ammunition and methamphetamine.

Pounds was also on probation for 2nd Degree Theft, a class D felony…and Domestic Abuse Assault, an aggravated misdemeanor. Pounds was charged for breaking into and stealing items from the Ranco Building in Sioux Rapids in late May of 2019.

In August of 2019, Pounds was accused of strangling a female behind an apartment complex in Newell. A probation revocation was initiated due to several rule violations.

Pounds’ sentence will run consecutively to a ten-year prison term imposed in Dickinson County for Willful Injury. Pounds was sentenced in March for stabbing a man in Milford in August of last year, which resulted in serious injuries.
