Rocket Slide Being Refurbished In Spencer

May 19, 2021

(Spencer)-The famous Rocket Slide of Spencer is taking donations for repairs and will hopefully be returning for use soon. KUOO’s Mathew Grisham has the story…

Rocket Slide Project

The Rocket Slide of Spencer has been a staple of Leach Park since the 1970’s, but due to successive years of flooding, water damage rendered the Rocket Slide too dangerous for community use in 2013. Since then it has been kept in the hopes of being restored and one day brought back to the park.

Eric Johannsen, a supportive citizen who helps gather funds for the Rocket Slide project, says that funding is going smoothly…

“Well, last week we had a really good week, as far as fundraising went, we’re just over maybe $42,000.”

Besides just refurbishing the Rocket Slide itself, the slide will be moved closer to the other play equipment in East Leach Park, away from where it originally stood in West Leach. It will also fund renovations on the play area around the slide…

“That’s been kind of going back and forth, speaking with Jared Elbert, the Recreational Director, he’s pretty much adamant that he wants to go for the rubberized surface, the no maintenance for the next 20 years, the safest and cleanest, and it’s gonna kinda brighten up the area kinda gives it a nice feel when you’re walking around on it.”

The original deadline was to have the project done by Flagfest, but Johannsen says the new project finish date may be the 4th of July. If you would like to help by donating to the project, you can mail your tax deductible donation to City Hall, or visit the project donation website here
