City Of Spencer Requesting Safety Studies At Two Dangerous Intersections, Including One Where A Fatality Occurred This Past Saturday

May 18, 2021

(Spencer)– City officials in Spencer are requesting the Iowa Department of Transportation conduct safety studies at two dangerous intersections in the city. One of those is Highway 71 and 13th Street southwest near Menards, where a Spencer man who was riding a motorcycle lost his life in an accident this past weekend. Mayor Kevin Robinson says he’s been in contact with State Representative Megan Jones regarding the matter…Robinson & Dangerous Intersections

“She has shared with me that the Department of Transportation on the state side is very aware; the regional director is aware and has been contacted by several people. That particular intersection and stretch is a state highway and while we don’t have the jurisdiction and authority as the city of Spencer to control or modify that intersection, we do have the right to advocate for the safety of all our citizens and the people who do come and visit our town, and that intersection probably has the most diversity of people not from the area. Menards has a pretty large draw. And so it’s critically important to work with the state and push the state of Iowa to study that.”

Robinson says the city is also requesting a safety study be conducted at another dangerous intersection near McDonalds and Wal-mart.

Robinson says both intersections have had a history of bad accidents.
