It Turned Out To Be A Busy Weekend For Spirit Lake Firefighters Who Responded To Two Additional Calls Sunday

May 17, 2021

(Spirit Lake)– It turned out to be a busy weekend for Spirit Lake firefighters.

In addition to the call Saturday in Montgomery, Chief Pat Daly says the department responded to two more fire calls Sunday. He says the first was a little after 7:00 am when they were called to a residence on Breakwater Drive, in the West Okoboji Harbor area…SLFD Calls01

“They could smell something but we couldn’t see nothing. We did go in and did some investigation. We did find there was a recessed light in the ceiling that was way overheated so we went up into the attic and tried to remove it and we ended up kind of punching some of the ceiling out to get some of the burnt insulation away from it.”

Firefighters were at that location about two hours.

Daly says they were then called around 7:30 pm last (Sunday) evening to the north side of Little Spirit Lake…SLFD Calls02

“We had a bunch of trees on fire back in there by the boat ramp up on the north end there. It was a real tough one to get to. We didn’t want to take the big trucks back through the field so we ended up doing it with the ATV and our little grass truck.”

Daly says the cause of that fire isn’t known. He says no one was in the area at the time and that the fire was discovered by a deputy. Firefighters were on the scene about an hour.
