Evacuation Ordered In Sibley Following Train Derailment And Fire

(Sibley)– An evacuation has been ordered for some residents of Sibley following the derailment this (Sunday) afternoon of a Union Pacific freight train.

Authorities say the derailment took place around 1:20 pm in the area of Jeddeloh Motors in Sibley. Witnesses reported seeing mangled rail cars and a large fireball shortly after the incident.

The train was carrying fertilizers and ammonium nitrate, which is highly explosive.

Fire departments from Sibley, Ashton, Little Rock, Ocheyedan, Melvin and Sheldon are on the scene. 

Residents near the site of the derailment have been evacuated.

It wasn’t immediately certain if there were any injuries or fatalities.

Smoke from the fire is visible in western Dickinson county.
