(Spirit Lake)-A number of Blood Drives are scheduled in Northwest Iowa this spring, KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:
The American Red Cross is holding numerous Blood Drives in Northwest Iowa over the next few weeks.
Regional Communications Manager Emily Holley says there’s always a need for blood. “The need for blood is constant because we don’t know what is happening at all times. The one year anniversary of the Iowa derecho will be coming up in August, last summer at this time there were wildfire, there’s flooding. Disasters impact blood supply, so we want to maintain a healthy blood supply at all times, and so we want to make sure that folks are always willing to roll up their sleeve if they’re eligible and able to give blood.”
She notes that extra safety precautions are in place for donors. “When you come in to give blood, we take your temperature. We required that everybody wear masks. We have the beds spaced. We also encourage folks to make appointments ahead of time. That ensures that there aren’t folks just kind of milling about and waiting for their turn, and something that I really recommend for folks to do, is sign up for something called RapidPass. That really is just a pre-screening. It helps you get through the process of giving blood. Instead of sitting in the waiting room and doing it there, you get to do it all from the comfort of your home and then you get right in.”
Local Blood Drives include in Spirit Lake at lakes Area Senior Center on Monday afternoon from noon to 6.
