(Estherville)-Iowa Lakes Community College has been awarded funds for a new youth internship program, KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:
Iowa Lakes Community College has received a grant of nearly a quarter million dollars from the Future Ready Iowa Summer Youth Internship Pilot Program.
Executive Director of Community and Business Relations, Jolene Rogers says, the program will connect high school students with area businesses. “It’s a great opportunity for businesses to connect with our local students and help cement and solidify their career path. So, they can see what an engineer does, or they can do an internship in ag, or they can do an internship in accounting, or healthcare, without being a nurse, but in that environment for several weeks. Our businesses, I started with them, to see if they were interested in bringing on high school kids into their business over the summer, and in a matter of about 24 hours, we had 30 positions ready for students to go, so then we reached out to our high schools in our area.”
She notes that students and businesses can connect online. “Our High School Partnership Staff are coordinating this project and it’s just phenomenal. Hours per week range from a minimum of 10 hours a week up to 30 hours a week, and the minimum weeks through the summer is 6 and they can work all the way up to 12 weeks.”
