Rotary Car Drop Contest Is History For Another Year

March 22, 2021

(Arnolds Park)– The Iowa Great Lakes Rotary car has gone through the ice for another year, and while contest organizers know who bought the lucky ticket, they aren’t releasing the person’s name yet. Club spokesman Leo Kofoot says they’re still trying to get a hold of the lucky person. Kofoot says the car was pretty stubborn this year going through the ice…Rotary Car Drop01

“Well the car finally settled on the bottom about 4:59 on Friday night. It actually, the passenger side dropped in early Monday morning and it just sat there for about four and-a-half days because the driver’s side was hung up on a block of ice. So it finally dropped and settled around 4:59 Friday night.”

Kofoot says the proceeds from this year’s event will once again go to some community projects the club puts on…Rotary Car Drop02

“We do a lot of work out at Shelby Duis Park out there. Last year, or the year before, we spent nearly $20,000 out there. We got some grants to help us with it, but we updated the playground and so forth and will continue to do community projects, especially youth ones. We donated dictionaries to all 3rd graders, we put some books in the libraries, various things like that around and.”

Kofoot thanks everyone who bought a ticket in this year’s contest. He says the response was overwhelming again this year…Rotary Car Drop03

“In fact this year we sold like 125 tickets online from people all over the midwest and even some down as far as Atlanta, Georgia.”

Kofoot says the club has been inquiries from organizations elsewhere that are interested in putting on a similar event…Rotary Car Drop04

“I’ve had several contacts with people up in Canada who want to do a similar type thing and they’re asking how it gets done and all the details and so they’re carrying on with it in some other places, too, or trying to, but we’ve been very successful with it here.”

Crews retrieved the car a little after 2:00 pm yesterday (Sunday).
