(Okoboji)-The Okoboji Foundation’s Youth in Philanthropy students are continuing to raise funds toward their goal of $55,000 for the 2021 season.
Foundation President Mindy Gress says the students are able to raise funds for the next month. “The Okoboji Foundation’s grants work in ways where we have two categories of grants. We have our Leadership Grants, which are comprised of requests of $25,000 and higher, and then we have our Community Needs grants, which are those requests under $25,000, and those are the requests that our students get to review and discuss and decide where they want the funds that they have raised to go. Now, even though our deadline for the grant submission was March 1, our students are able to fundraise through the end of March, and any money that comes in they’re able to still give out.”
She notes that the students are working directly with the Lakes Area business community. “These students are going out and they’re talking to individuals and businesses in our community. They are creating those relationships. They’re requesting that community member supports them in their efforts, and just to support the community in general. So, they’re bringing in these dollars all on their own. We get to see the dollars coming in and we get to see the notes that come in along with those contributions from community members thanking them for the outreach and for the students’ work in making a difference. So, it’s really been a cool process to be a part of.”
Grant recipients will be announced in early May.
