Spencer Flagfest and Sesquicentennial Committee announce Call for Entries in Period Clothing Contest

March 01, 2021
(Spencer)-The Spencer Flagfest & Sesquicentennial core committee has released its call for entries to the DIY Period Clothing Contest that will be judged during the 2021 Flagfest Opening Ceremonies. The Period Clothing Contest is now taking registrations.
Spencer Community Theatre (SCT) along with Spencer Municipal Utilities (SMU) developed an instructional do-it-yourself video for those who would like to create costumes to be submitted for this contest. The video can be viewed at www.spencerchamber.com/Flagfest
Becky Fear-Hatting, Program Director at the Spencer Chamber says, “SCT and SMU did a wonderful job creating this video and I can’t wait to see the creativity that will be highlighted during Opening Ceremonies! This will be a great project for families, friends and loved ones to complete together! Boys Scouts, Girl Scouts and other area service clubs could really have some fun with this event!”
The Period Clothing Contest entries should highlight the attire during the 1870s. Clothing for both men and women in Iowa was similar in style to fashions advertised in national magazines and newspapers of the 1870s. However, women’s dresses had high necklines and full-length sleeves, unlike some contemporary fashion illustrations. Men’s suits were subdued in color and loose in fit, much like the suits advertised nationally. Cotton, wool and silk fabrics appeared in many garments. Women’s work clothing was limited to house-dresses; a man’s working blouse and overalls were also popular during this time frame.

Those wishing to participate can find a registration form at www.spencerchamber.com/flagfest. The form must be completed and returned to the Spencer Chamber prior to Friday, May 21, 2021 and there is no cost to participate. Judging will take place on Friday, June 11 from 3:30PM-4:00PM and registered participants must wear the costume submitted. Categories for the Period Clothing will include: Individual, Family, Kids 16 & under. Winners will be announced that evening prior to the kiddie parade at the Clay County Courthouse.
