Significant Blizzard Likely To Impact The Region

December 23, 2020

(Spirit Lake)– What could be a significant blizzard remains on track to affect the region today (Wed.) through tonight.

The National Weather Service has expanded the blizzard warning to include the entire region. It goes into effect at 10:00 am and continues until midnight tonight (Wed.)

Forecasters now say 5 to 7 inches of snow can be expected.

The wind will also greatly increase through the day, with gusts in excess of 50 mph possible at times, resulting in extremely poor visibility and possible whiteout conditions, resulting in dangerous travel conditions.

Temperatures will also fall, dropping into the teens and single digits by evening. Wind chills tonight will become dangerously cold, in the range of 14 below to 24 degrees below zero.

While the snow will move out by late tonight (Wed.), the wind will continue through the day Thursday with blowing and drifting continuing to be an issue, especially in open areas. Temperatures Thursday won’t get out of the single digits for highs. Calmer and warmer conditions are expected Christmas day with highs approaching 30.
