Okoboji Foundation Contributes $50,000 To Francis Sites Wetland Project

December 22, 2020

(Spirit Lake)– The Okoboji Foundation recently presented a check for $50,000 for the Francis Sites wetland project. The funds will be put toward the first phase of the project, currently under way.

As we’ve reported previously, the project is a joint venture by Dickinson county and the city of Spirit Lake. It’s been in the planning stages since 2012.

It’s designed to filter storm run off water from a roughly 391 acre watershed before it gets into East Lake Okoboji.

Upon completion of the second phase of the project, the wetland is expected to reduce sediment and phosphorous loads by 79 percent and will prevent flooding over the county-owned road, which has repeatedly occurred in recent years.
