(Spirit Lake)-The local Knights of Columbus have delivered Coats to Spirit Lake Elementary school, KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:
The Iowa Great Lakes Knights of Columbus Council 5043 held its Coats for Kids campaign during the month of December this year.
Officer Paul Katzfey says the program is based on need at the school. “What we’ve done in the past few years now is, gathered up coats and mittens and such for the elementary school in Spirit Lake, and we actually ask the school what they need so we can fill that need specific to exactly what’s needed there.”
He notes that the Council holds a number of charitable events through the year. “Typically what we do, is things that will impact the entire community so, we’ve done a soup and pie supper, which is a big fundraiser that we do in the fall. The funds from that are used typically to help those with intellectual disabilities, folks that might need additional assistance in their lives for whatever reason. We’ll also do sporting events, things like the free throw competition, things that are involved with the school, things like an annual spelling bee that we’ve done. Now, some of those things have had to go the way of covid this year, but we’re hoping to have those back next year.”
The Iowa Great Lakes Council has contributed more than $18,000 to community needs over the last two years.
