No Injuries Reported In Spirit Lake Structure Fire

December 18, 2020

(Spirit Lake)– No injuries were reported Thursday in a shop/garage fire in Spirit Lake.

Assistant Spirit Lake Fire Chief Chris Hoerichs says they were called to 3027 Erie Avenue around 2:20 pm…Hoerichs01

“On arrival crews found that it was actually a shop on fire with heavy smoke and fire through the roof. Crews worked to extinguish the fire and prevented it from spreading to a house that was just to the north.”

At that point Hoerichs says they put a call in for some additional help…Hoerichs02

“We had APO Fire out there for mutual aid and we had Wedeking out there with his excavator to help tear the building apart to complete the extinguishment.”

A plume of dark smoke from the fire could be seen for miles. Hoerichs says battling a fire of that nature can present some special challenges…Hoerichs03

“Yeah, you know once a shop like that has that much fire in it it’s difficult, really difficult, to put out because of all of the contents that are inside of a metal building like that.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation. He says they’ll be back on the scene later today.

Spirit Lake police, Dickinson County Emergency Management, Black Hills Energy and Alliant Energy assisted on the scene.

Several streets and intersections in the area were cordoned off while crews battled the blaze.
