(Spirit Lake)-The Festival of Giving Trees is available for viewing at the Great Lakes Mall, KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:
The Festival of Giving Trees is getting underway, with the trees on display at the Great Lakes Mall in Spirit Lake.
Marketing Coordinator Kim Olander with Spirit Lake Silver and Gold explains how it works. “The Festival of Giving Trees in an annual event that the Mall and Spirit Lake Silver & Gold put on. Organizations and businesses in the area come and decorate a tree, and they can decorate it based on the theme of non-perishable food items that they’re collecting for Upper Des Moines, or they’ve decorated it for Christmas. We have lots of different trees to look at, and then the public can come in and vote for their favorite decorative tree, so the one that they think is the prettiest, best decorated tree out of all of them, and then you can put your item under there and that counts as a vote. All the non-perishable items that we collect go to Upper Des Moines here in Spirit Lake.”
She says that prizes are awarded at the end of the event. “We have two winners every year, one winner for the tree with the most creative decorations. They are given $200 to their choice of charity, so they pick a charity locally that we donate the money to, and then we also give $200 to the sponsor that collects the most items.”
The event runs through December 23rd.
