New Proclamation Of Disaster Emergency Signed Earlier This Week By Gov. Reynolds Puts Into Place New Driver’s License Expiration Dates

December 11, 2020

(Spirit Lake)– A new Proclamation of Disaster Emergency signed earlier this week by Governor Kim Reynolds puts into place some new dates for driver’s licenses and motor vehicles. Dickinson County Treasurer Kris Rowley…Rowley & New Deadlines01

“If your driver’s license expired back on January 16th of 2020, so last January, then you can still drive with it, it’s not considered suspended as far as driving, you can still drive through now January 8th of 2021, almost a year later. The state is encouraging people though to contact our office if you happen to have a driver’s license that really is that old. We don’t think it’s going to be extended beyond January 8th and we want to make sure that you’re able to drive with full privileges when that date passes.”

Rowley says most have been taking care of that…Rowley & New Deadlines02

“We’ve got just a real small backlog of people we haven’t heard from and they may have moved or are no longer in the area. But if you are one of those people, please get that taken care of as fast as possible. Our driver’s license station is open by appointment only, so you can call us for an appointment, 712-336-6277 and we’re able to get you in really quick. We’re caught up, so it should not be long for an appointment. You can probably get one the same day that you call.”

Rowley says the proclamation, however, no longer pertains to vehicle registration renewals…Rowley & New Deadlines03

“If you get that renewal notice in the mail make sure that you’re getting it taken care of timely because those are not extended. But if you bought a car recently from a dealer, some of the offices across the state, Treasurer’s Offices, have had backlogs or closures, often due to covid, and so the Governor has extended the time you can drive with a dealer temp tag to 90 days.”

Normally she says that must be completed in 45 days. Rowley says the requirement to submit title application work to the county treasurer within 30 days remains in effect. She says a late fee will be charged if that isn’t done on time.

Rowley also again reminds everyone the REAL ID driver’s license enforcement to fly was extended by federal law until October 1st, 2021.
