(Spirit Lake)– An arrest has been made in connection with that hit-and-run boat collision Tuesday night on West Lake Okoboji.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says officers Thursday located a damaged boat consistent to the one involved in the incident, which seriously injured Vaughn Wickman of Spirit Lake, who was in the boat that was hit. A DNR officer located the boat wanted in connection with the incident in a hoist at a private residence on the north end of West Lake Okoboji. Conservation officers obtained a search warrant and seized the boat, a 2010 28-foot Boston Whaler.
Shortly after seizing the boat, authorities say 20-year-old Zachery Kruse of Spirit Lake turned himself in to DNR officers and admitted to operating the vessel when the hit-and-run took place.
Kruse was charged with failing to give aid in a vessel resulting in a serious injury, an aggravated misdemeanor. He was booked into the Dickinson county jail.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Bureau was assisted by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office and numerous citizens in the investigation.
