Gov. Kim Reynolds Announces Counties, Cities To Receive Federal CARES Funding

(Des Moines)– Governor Kim Reynolds today (Tues.) announced the allocation of funding through the federal CARES Act to local governments throughout the state to assist them with pandemic-related expenses. The Governor announced $125 million of the $1.25 billion allocated to the state will go to local governments…Local Govts Funding01 

“These funds can be used to reimburse for expenditures such as COVID-19 medical supplies and equipment, PPE, sanitizing products, testing supplies and ventilators. Other COVID-19 expenses such as payroll costs for public health and public safety personnel, emergency staffing and overtime medical transportation; cost associated with enhanced 211 service; technology expenses to allow local services to be provided remotely.”

Joining the Governor’s press conference today (Tues.) was Burlin Matthews of the Clay County Board of Supervisors. He said expenses for counties, cities and schools are quickly mounting as they reopen facilities and put the proper precautions in place…Local Govts Funding02 

“Now as Clay county compiles its expenditures for the pandemic, the true financial picture will develop. However, as of yesterday, Clay county has expended $20,809.89 just to re-open our buildings after having been closed to the public.”

Of the $125 million to be distributed to cities and counties, the Governor says 60 percent will go to cities with 40 percent to counties. She says the amounts distributed will be determined by population in the 2019 census.
