(Newell)– Officials now say the water in Newell is safe.
A “do not use” advisory was issued Wednesday after the town’s water supply operator noticed a small amount of mercury in a wastewater drain at the city’s treatment plant.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said this (Thursday) afternoon there was no detection of mercury in water samples that were taken from five different sites. As a result, they say residents can once again safely resume using the tap water.
Officials say the city of Newell is working to properly remove the mercury from the building.
