(Spirit Lake)-Iowa’s Spring Turkey Season is getting underway today.
DNR Conservation Officer Steve Reighard says Youth Season got underway on Friday:
“Youth Turkey Season, which is residents only, is April 10-12, and Season 1 of Regular Turkey Season is April 13-16. Bearded only birds, you know, we aren’t shooting any hens. Hen season is closedthis time of year.”
He adds that hunters and hikers should not wear red or any colors that might look like a turkey:
“Don’t wear red, because you don’t want to look like a bird going through the brush with the colors of a bird going out there. Don’t wear red bandanas or anything like that. That goes for people out hiking, too. There’s a lot of people out hiking our game management areas right now just to get out of the house. Just keep your distances from each other and if you harvest a bird, make sure to report it. It’s got to be reported by midnight the day after they harvest.”
